The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador has awarded a contract valued at $6.1 million to Brook Construction to construct the new protective care extension of the Dr. Hugh Twomey Health Centre in Botwood.

The new extension will include 20 resident rooms, a lounge, a nursing station, and other ancillary spaces. All of these amenities will be in a 16,250 square-feet single-story facility attached to the existing health centre. Work will also include a wander garden, asphalt, grading and landscaping around the immediate extension.

Construction will start later this summer and will be completed in late 2020.

Construction work is also underway on new 60-bed long-term care homes in Gander and Grand Falls-Windsor. All three projects are estimated to create more than 343 person-years of employment during construction and generate $39 million in economic activity in the central region.

All three projects are included in The Way Forward: A Multi-Year Plan for Infrastructure Investments, which outlines projects for education, health care, justice, roads, and municipal infrastructure. The plan includes $839.9 million over the next five years for major health care infrastructure projects including new facilities, expansions and redevelopment of existing facilities.

Investments in health infrastructure delivers on commitments in The Way Forward to strengthen the province’s economic foundation and deliver better services and better outcomes for residents. The Way Forward outlines all actions the Provincial Government is taking to achieve a strong, diversified province with a high standard of living, and can be viewed at www.thewayforward.gov.nl.ca.

“Today’s announcement is exciting news for residents in the region. It builds on the momentum we have seen with the commencement of construction of two new long-term care homes in Grand Falls-Windsor and Gander. The extension of the protective care unit in Botwood will create employment opportunities, generate economic activity, and when completed, make this facility a centre of excellence for dementia care in the province.”
