June 26, 2019

Residents in Labrador are advised that helicopter service began today for travellers stranded by the washout on Route 510, Trans-Labrador Highway.

The helicopter travels between the parking area near the Department of Transportation and Works’ Crooks Lake depot, approximately 150 kilometres south of Happy Valley-Goose Bay and the airport in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

The service is departing approximately every two hours, on a load and go basis, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Priority is given to residents travelling for medical appointments and work commitments. Other travellers will be accommodated as space allows.

Crews are on site of the washout with work progressing on the installation of new culverts.

Crews estimate the highway may reopen late Sunday but will depend on work progress and water levels. Updates will be provided as they become available.

Travellers who require updates or assistance can contact the Department of Transportation and Works Labrador dispatch office at 709-896-7840 between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.
