Provincial Government Awards Contract to Construct New Primary School in Bay Roberts

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador has awarded a contract to construct a new primary school in Bay Roberts to replace Coley’s Point Primary. The contract, valued at approximately $16.2 million, has been awarded to JMJ Holdings Ltd.

The new school will be designed to accommodate students from Kindergarten to Grade 3 and will be located behind Amalgamated Academy on Eric Dawe Drive. It will be a single-storey, 4,100-square-metre facility featuring 18 classrooms, a gymnasium, a music room, cafeteria and other required amenities.

Construction is anticipated to begin in spring 2019 and be completed in early 2021.

A Request for Proposals to construct the new Paradise Intermediate was issued in January, while tenders for the replacement of Bay d’Espoir Academy and the Gander Academy reconstruction will be issued this winter. Construction on these three projects is expected to start in 2019 and be completed in 2021. Construction continues on the Mobile Central High and St. Peter’s Academy extensions, with occupancy of both expected this year.

These projects deliver on commitments outlined in The Way Forward: A Multi-Year Plan for Infrastructure Investments. The plan outlines commitments to education, health, buildings and roads, and municipal infrastructure through a total investment of nearly $3 billion.

These initiatives also deliver on commitments in The Way Forward to strengthen the province’s economic foundation and deliver better services and better outcomes for residents. The Way Forward outlines all actions the Provincial Government is taking to achieve a strong, diversified province with a high standard of living, and can be viewed at

“We’re pleased to reach this next milestone in delivering a new primary school for the Bay Roberts area. Work begins this year and in 2021, students and staff will move into a new and modern facility designed to meet the needs of their community for the long-term.”
Honourable Steve Crocker
Minister of Transportation and Works

“The new primary school for the Bay Roberts area is one of many important projects moving forward across the province. Such investments have a meaningful impact on learning as we continue to implement the Education Action Plan which is helping to ensure all children have access to an education system that is responsive to their strengths and needs.”
Honourable Al Hawkins
Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development

“I am very pleased that government has taken action and is delivering this new school. The people of Bay Roberts and surrounding communities have lobbied for more than a decade for a modern, clean and healthy facility for our young primary students, staff and entire school community. This is great news that the people deserve. Today marks the beginning of the physical work on this exciting project.”
