Media Advisory: Minister Mitchelmore to Attend Welcome Reception for UNESCO Geopark Evaluators

The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, will attend the Discovery Aspiring Global Geopark welcome reception for evaluators from UNESCO who will be in the province from July 22-24 to undergo a field inspection mission. The reception takes place on Sunday, July 21 at 6:00 p.m. at The Garrick Annex, Bonavista.

Discovery applied to be designated as a UNESCO Global Geopark in November, 2018. For more information on the Discovery Aspiring Global Geopark, click here external link.

Recommendations on applications by UNESCO will occur in September 2019, and a decision is to be announced in April, 2020.

UNESCO Global Geoparks are geographical areas where sites and landscapes of international geological significance are managed with an approach of combining conservation and education with sustainable development while involving communities. There are currently 147 UNESCO Global Geoparks in 41 countries around the globe, three of which are in North America.
