The Town of Carbonear is expanding and renovating the Princess Sheila NaGeira Theatre so it can diversify and accommodate larger scale events, including theatre productions and other shows. The expansion involves the construction of a large multi-purpose room, a kitchenette and an improved and bigger backstage area, including renovated dressing rooms and washrooms.

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is contributing $203,223 towards the project and the Government of Canada is providing a non-repayable contribution of $528,382.

The Honourable Steve Crocker, Minister of Transportation and Works and MHA for Carbonear -Trinity – Bay de Verde, on behalf of the Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, and Ken McDonald, Member of Parliament for Avalon, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), made the announcement today.

This investment builds on commitments made by the Government of Canada and the four Atlantic Provinces to drive economic growth in the region through the Atlantic Growth Strategy by helping the region’s tourism industry attract more visitors and create new jobs. This bold new approach is in line with Canada’s Tourism Vision, which seeks to make Canada a top-10 global tourism destination by 2025.

Provincial support for these projects delivers on commitments of The Way Forward to strengthen the province’s economic foundation. The Way Forward outlines all actions the Provincial Government is taking to achieve a strong, diversified province with a high standard of living, and can be viewed at thewayforward.gov.nl.ca.
