The following is being distributed at the request of The Rooms Corporation:
The Rooms is pleased to announce the Provincial Art Bank Jury has selected 31 new works as part of the Provincial Art Bank collection. The selection represents artists from all over the province including Bonavista, Corner Brook, Port Union, Stephenville, St. John’s and Sheshatshui. Art will be displayed in public buildings throughout the province.
This year saw a 20 per cent increase in submissions to the program over the previous year. More than 100 artists submitted 283 artworks in various media for consideration, including four original works by Indigenous Artists, including Nelson White, the first Indigenous Artist in Residence at The Rooms. The selection also includes works by emerging artists Emily Pittman and Hazel Eckert; as well as works by artists Ned Pratt, Marlene Creates and James Miller.
Applications for acquisition are reviewed once a year by an independent, external jury selected by the Art Bank Advisory Committee. Artworks are recommended to the Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation for purchase by the province. The Provincial Government began the Art Bank Collection in 1984 to promote the cultural heritage of the province and to provide economic benefit to artists.
A complete list of this year’s acquisitions is included in the backgrounder below.
Quotes
“Congratulations to all artists who had their work selected this year and to all artists who submitted for consideration. The Provincial Art Bank collection is one of a number of ways our government is supporting and promoting the important role our visual artists play in the province. By displaying art in our public buildings we are enriching our public spaces and shining a spotlight on our local artists and their accomplishments.”
Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore
Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation
“We are so pleased to see an increasing interest in the number of works submitted to the Provincial Art Bank. It’s wonderful to see such a variety of media created by artists from all over the province. It’s truly a representation of what our province has to offer as a celebration of our culture and way of life.”
