Government Begins Consultations on Quarry Legislation Review

  • Natural Resources

December 17, 2019

The Department of Natural Resources is undertaking consultations regarding a review of the legislation that regulates quarry activity in the province. Consultations will help to develop modern and comprehensive legislation that addresses gaps and adopts best practices from other jurisdictions to support the development of the province’s quarry resources.

The goal is to ensure the legislation better reflects the needs of quarry operators, communities and other stakeholders, effectively manages the province’s quarry resources, and supports equal business opportunities for all.

Quarry materials are non-renewable resources that include sand, rock, clay and soil in their natural state and are used in the construction and agricultural industries. They are required to maintain existing infrastructure and to develop the new, efficient infrastructure of the future.

A questionnaire can be completed online at www.EngageNL.ca. Written submissions are also welcome at Quarryreview@gov.nl.ca or can be mailed to:

Mineral Lands Division
Department of Natural Resources
3rd floor, Natural Resources Building
P.O. Box 8700
St. John’s, NL A1B 4J6

In-person consultation sessions will take place across the province in early 2020 with times and locations to be announced at a later date.

If you have any questions related to the consultation process, please email Quarryreview@gov.nl.ca or call 709-729-6410 or 709-729-4044.

Quote
“We must ensure our quarry resources are prudently used and managed as they are important resources that contribute to projects in our province such as road construction, wharf protection and building maintenance. We welcome the knowledge and insight of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, including those with expertise in the quarry industry and land use developments in the creation of more effective legislation.”
Honourable Siobhan Coady
Minister of Natural Resources
