Appointment Made to the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board

The Honourable Siobhan Coady, Minister of Natural Resources and the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Natural Resources Canada today announced the appointment of Roger Grimes as the Chair of the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board (C-NLOPB). Mr. Grimes’s appointment is for a six-year term. The appointment was made through the merit-based appointment process established by the Independent Appointments Commission Act.

The C-NLOPB was established in 1986 through the Atlantic Accord for the purpose of regulating the oil and gas industry offshore Newfoundland and Labrador. The seven-member board comprises three members appointed by the Federal Government, three appointed by the Provincial Government, and a Chair and CEO who is appointed jointly by the two governments.

BACKGROUNDER

Biography for Roger Grimes
Roger Grimes was a high school math and science teacher from 1972-1989 (B.Sc., B.Ed., M.Ed.). He was President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers’ Association and a Board Member of the Canadian Teachers’ Federation from 1985-87.

In 1989, Mr. Grimes was elected to the provincial legislature and became Parliamentary Assistant to Premier Clyde Wells. From 1991-2000, he served as a Cabinet Minister in five different portfolios, including Health, Education and Natural Resources.

From 2001-2003, Mr. Grimes was Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador and then served as Leader of the Official Opposition from November 2003 until his retirement in June 2005.

Since retiring, Mr. Grimes continues regular public political commentary, is an avid reader, golfer and recreational hockey player.

In April 2018, Mr. Grimes was appointed by the Government of Canada as a member of the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board (C-NLOPB). In February 2019, Roger was selected by the C-NLOPB Board to be Acting Chair.
