March 1, 2019

Today, the Honourable Siobhan Coady, Minister of Natural Resources, was joined by representatives of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists Newfoundland and Labrador (PEGNL) for the signing of a proclamation acknowledging March as National Engineering and Geoscience Month in Newfoundland and Labrador.

This month is an annual event that highlights the importance of engineering and geoscience to the daily lives of residents of our country and province. These professionals are helping advance major resource development projects in our offshore petroleum and mining industries, which are contributing to our economic development.

Throughout Newfoundland and Labrador the work of engineers and geoscientists, through planning, design, construction and operations, can be seen through projects affecting our everyday lives such as transportation, infrastructure, buildings, communications, energy systems and water and sewer systems.

Over the last two years, more than $18 billion in private sector investments in mining and oil and gas projects has been announced in our province. The strength and growth of these industries is due in part to the highly skilled professionals that are working on these projects, including the engineers and geoscientists.

Quotes
“I am pleased to proclaim March as National Engineering and Geoscience Month in Newfoundland and Labrador. As the Minister of Natural Resources, I am proud of our engineers and geoscientists and the invaluable contributions they are making to our mining and offshore petroleum sector on a daily basis. We see the work of our talented engineers and geoscientists every day, as we drive over a bridge, walk into a newly constructed building or hear about the success of a new mine or offshore development project. We are positioning Newfoundland and Labrador globally as a preferred location for oil and gas and mining development – and the work of our engineers and geoscientists is helping us to achieve this goal.”
Honourable Siobhan Coady
Minister of Natural Resources

“National Engineering and Geoscience Month gives us an opportunity to highlight the future of engineering and geoscience, especially to students, while celebrating the contributions of both professions to the province. We are pleased to have Minister Coady help us open the festivities for this month, and we encourage individuals to take part in one of our events and learn more about the many aspects of both engineering and geoscience.”
