Public Advisory: The 12 Days of Fire Safety – Day 10

  • Municipal Affairs and Environment

December 20, 2019

Space heaters are becoming increasingly popular as a second source of heat in homes and garages.

When operating a space heater, keep these safety suggestions top of mind:

  • Inspect the cord of the space heater and ensure it is not damaged. Always plug a space heater directly into an outlet and do not use an extension cord;
  • Always keep at least one metre of space around a space heater and never leave a space heater running in an unoccupied room;
  • Ensure no flammable materials, like clothing, furniture, or bedding are near your source of heating;
  • Never dry shoes or clothes by placing them on a heater or wood stove;
  • Always supervise children and pets around sources of heat.
