Smoke alarms can save lives. This holiday season, ensure that smoke alarms are correctly installed and properly maintained.

Tips for installing and maintaining smoke alarms:

  • Use inter-connected smoke alarms so that if one smoke alarm sounds, they all sound;
  • A smoke alarm should be placed inside and outside designate sleeping areas;
  • Ensure that smoke alarms are tested once a month to ensure they are working properly;
  • Replace the batteries as often as indicated by the smoke alarm manufacturer. It is recommend to replace them every six months when the clocks change; and
  • Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.
