The Honourable Graham Letto, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Environment, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKING REGISTERED:

Valentine Gold Project (Reg. 2015)
Proponent: Marathon Gold Corporation

The proponent is proposing to develop a gold mine approximately 55 kilometres southwest of Millertown in central Newfoundland. The project includes four potential mining areas: Leprechaun, Sprite, Marathon, and Victory deposits. Standard surface mining techniques will be used in open pit construction and operation. The project will involve waste rock disposal piles; crushing and stockpiling areas; heap leach processing; conventional milling; processing facilities; and tailings management areas. It will require personal accommodations and supporting infrastructure including roads; power lines; buildings; and water and effluent management facilities. The construction period is expected to last 18-24 months followed by an estimated mine operation life of 13 years. The project will operate 24 hours per day, seven days a week on a 12-hour shift basis.

The undertaking was registered on April 16, 2019; the deadline for public comments is May 21, 2019; and the minister’s decision is due by May 31, 2019.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT REQUIRED:

Cavendish Beef Farm (Reg. 2002)

The minister has advised the proponent that an environmental impact statement (EIS) is required for this project. Additional information must be provided to address the potential effects of odour and vectors associated with the project on the surrounding environment; to describe waste management; and to propose a method of public engagement that will be implemented to address public concerns. An environmental assessment committee will be appointed to provide scientific and technical advice to the minister and to prepare draft guidelines for conducting the EIS.
