Minister Letto Comments on Marystown Shipyard Discussions

February 8, 2019

The following statement was given today by the Honourable Graham Letto, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Environment:

Our government has always wanted to see the shipyard in Marystown become a hub of economic activity and job creation for our province, and we have worked in partnership with the Town of Marystown in an effort to make that happen.

We are committed to working with the Town of Marystown to develop an agreement that satisfies all economic and financial conditions that would be placed on any such undertaking but remain firm that those conditions must be met.

The Department of Municipal Affairs and Environment has a responsibility to provide oversight and advice to municipal governments across the province on matters that have the potential to impact the people they are meant to serve. Our government takes that responsibility seriously.

Our approach reflects requirements under the Municipalities Act, and once the town provides the information it previously committed to give to the Provincial Government, discussions on this project will continue to advance.
