Public Advisory: Public Cautioned About Email Scam Related to Traffic Fines

A fraudulent email is circulating that requests the email recipient send money for traffic fines.

The email, which appears to be from ‘traffic enforcement’, states the recipient incurred a speeding ticket, which was caught on a traffic camera. The email requests the recipient pay the fine to avoid deduction of a demerit point. It continues to state that if not paid immediately there will be a 10 per cent daily increase in payment. There is a tap button for payment included in the email.

The Fines Administration Division does not email notices related to tickets or fines. Instead, letters are mailed to clients upon conviction. There are no discounts for early payment, and no escalation of cost other than a one-time late fee when warranted.

Anyone who receives a suspicious communication should immediately report it to the Anti-Fraud Centre of Canada at www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca external link or call 1-888-495-8501.
