July 9, 2019

The following statement was issued today by the Honourable Andrew Parsons, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Attorney General:

I would like to offer condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of retired Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Chief Robert Johnston.

Mr. Johnston joined the RNC in 1979 and served as Chief between 2010 and 2014. He worked his way through the ranks from constable to chief — a testament to his hard work and the respect that he garnered from all corners. He was instrumental in the evolution of the RNC becoming one of the world’s finest police agencies.

Mr. Johnston passed away after a courageous battle with brain cancer. After being diagnosed, he gave hope to survivors through positivity and courage – traits he exhibited during his long policing career. He will be remembered for his strength and contributions to the province.

On behalf of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador, I extend my sincerest condolences to his wife Gloria, daughters Amanda and Sarah, and his mother Inez. I hope they take comfort knowing the profoundly positive impact he has had on the province. Chief Johnston was deeply loved and highly admired by all who knew him. He will be sadly missed.
