House of Assembly – Information and Privacy Commissioner Appointed

The Honourable Perry Trimper, Speaker of the House of Assembly, today announced the appointment of Michael Harvey as Information and Privacy Commissioner, effective August 5, 2019. The appointment was confirmed by resolution of the House of Assembly on July 23, 2019 in accordance with Section 85 of the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act, 2015 (ATIPPA, 2015).

“I extend my congratulations to Mr. Harvey on his appointment. He has worked with both the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act, 2015 and the Personal Health Information Act, and led the transition team for government during the implementation of the ATIPPA, 2015. His varied experience will be an asset to this Statutory Office and I wish him well in his new role.”

Speaker Trimper also extends sincere thanks to Ms. Victoria Woodworth-Lynas who has served as acting Information and Privacy Commissioner since March 2019, and wishes her well in her future endeavours.

BIOGRAPHY

Michael Harvey
Michael Harvey is currently the Assistant Deputy Minister for Policy, Planning and Performance Management in the Department of Health and Community Services, a position he has held since 2015. Mr. Harvey joined the provincial government in January 2006 in the Intergovernmental Affairs Secretariat, and has also worked in the former Department of Children, Youth and Family Services and Cabinet Secretariat. He has lectured in political science and public administration at Memorial University, the University of Guelph and the University of Toronto. Mr. Harvey is a graduate of Memorial University, with a BA (Hons) in Political Science; has a MA in Political Studies from Queen’s University; and holds an Executive Certificate in Conflict Management from the University of Windsor Faculty of Law/Stitt Feld Handy Group.
