December 31, 2019

While recreational cannabis is legal in Canada, the Department of Health and Community Services is reminding people to be responsible and safe if they choose to use.

There are health risks with using cannabis. The best way to protect yourself is to avoid its use completely.

If you do choose to use, there are ways to reduce your risk including:

  • Delay cannabis use until the age of 25, when the brain is fully developed;
  • Avoid vaping or smoking cannabis;
  • Avoid mixing cannabis with other substances such as alcohol or other drugs;
  • Do not drive or operate machinery after using cannabis;
  • Avoid cannabis completely if you are at risk for mental health problems; and
  • Do not use cannabis if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Cannabis edibles and drinks are now available for purchase. The effects of edibles and drinks can be delayed up to a few hours.

To avoid cannabis poisoning, start low and go slow. Start with low doses and wait several hours before eating or drinking more.

Cannabis edibles may look like regular snacks. Be sure to keep these products out of reach of children and pets. Store cannabis in locked cabinets and on high shelves.

Legal cannabis is a regulated product and safer than illegal cannabis. If you choose to buy cannabis, shop legal.
