Public Advisory: The 12 Days of Fire Safety – Day 3

  • Municipal Affairs and Environment

December 11, 2019

Celebrating during the holidays is filled with fun for children and youth. Fire safety should be top-of-mind when attending festive activities.

Here are some precautions to help protect children and youth when preparing to host and attend holiday events:

  • Never leave children unsupervised around a fireplace, wood stove, candles or space heaters;
  • Ensure your smoke alarms are working properly;
  • Never allow children to play with matches, lighters, or candles;
  • Practice fire drills in your home. Be sure everyone knows two ways out and windows and doors open easily;
  • Teach children to dial 911 in case of a fire or emergency; and
  • Prepare a checklist of important items to discuss with your babysitter before heading out.

The Department of Municipal Affairs and Environment wishes all residents a safe and happy holiday season.
