Celebrating during the holidays is filled with fun for children and youth. Fire safety should be top-of-mind when attending festive activities.
Here are some precautions to help protect children and youth when preparing to host and attend holiday events:
- Never leave children unsupervised around a fireplace, wood stove, candles or space heaters;
- Ensure your smoke alarms are working properly;
- Never allow children to play with matches, lighters, or candles;
- Practice fire drills in your home. Be sure everyone knows two ways out and windows and doors open easily;
- Teach children to dial 911 in case of a fire or emergency; and
- Prepare a checklist of important items to discuss with your babysitter before heading out.
