Construction to Begin on Emergency Department Re-design at the Bonavista Peninsula Health Centre

March 25, 2019

The Honourable John Haggie, Minister of Health and Community Services, today announced that construction will commence during summer 2019 on a $2.2 million re-design of the emergency department at the Bonavista Peninsula Health Centre.

The new emergency department will include space for triage, registration and waiting space, examination, trauma and observation areas, a nursing station and utility supports. The re-design will also provide improved patient and staff flow, improved patient privacy and confidentiality, as well as enhanced safety and security features bases on occupational health and safety standards.

In August 2018, Minister Haggie also announced the development of a $2.23 million wellness centre for the Bonavista Peninsula. This will include a gymnasium and exercise room, community kitchen, and meeting space. The centre will be the one main site in the community where people will be able to easily access primary health care services, focusing on chronic disease management, public health, home and community supports, and mental health and addictions.

Both projects were planned in consultation with Eastern Health, the Town of Bonavista, the Bonavista Primary Health Care Community Advisory Committee, Tip-a-Vista Wellness, the Discovery Health Foundation and area Lions Clubs. The projects are funded by the Provincial Government and Eastern Health, with contributions from the Discovery Health Foundation, area Lions Clubs, and other community partners.

Primary health care delivery in Bonavista is similar to the work being led by other primary health care teams in Botwood, Grand Bank, Gander, Happy Valley-Goose Bay, and Corner Brook. This initiative delivers on commitments in The Way Forward to deliver better services and better outcomes for residents. The Way Forward outlines all actions the Provincial Government is taking to achieve a strong, diversified province with a high standard of living.
