Amendments Proposed to Strengthen the Nurses’ Act

The Honourable John Haggie, Minister of Health and Community Services today announced proposed amendments to the Registered Nurses Act, 2008, which will support nurses as they continue to provide exemplary service to the people of the province.

The act regulates Registered Nurses and Nurse Practitioners, of which the Association of Registered Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador (ARNNL) is the regulatory body.

To better reflect its public protection mandate and, at the ARNNL’s request, one of proposed amendments will change the name of the organization to the College of Registered Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The proposed amendments also:

  • Remove the requirement to have a legislated standards committee approve nurse practitioners’ scope of practice now that they have become well established in province’s health care system.
  • Clarify the quality assurance process. Having the authority to address concerns before they become more serious is a positive means of ensuring that registered nurses continue to provide the highest level of care and services.

Quotes
“Registered nurses are the core of our health care system, on the front lines of patient care at every level, and we certainly appreciate the unique perspective the profession brings to patient care and service delivery. The amendments we have made to the Registered Nurses Act, 2008, will strengthen and expand the role of these professionals.”
Honourable John Haggie
Minister of Health and Community Services

“In following national trends and changing from an association to a college we are redefining our identity and reaffirming our mission. While our name may change, our mandate to the public remains steadfast. The changes to the Registered Nurses Act will give rise to a renewed and modernized regulator that will become synonymous with top quality care, protection of public health, and excellence in the profession of nursing.”

As the largest group of health professionals in the province, our presence is paramount to the delivery of top-quality care in Newfoundland and Labrador. This is a transformative process which will define the vital role we play in the lives of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.”
