Provincial Government Launches 2019 Pre-Budget Consultations

January 7, 2019

The Provincial Government today launched its online pre-budget consultations for Budget 2019. Starting today, members of the public and industry stakeholders can visit www.engagenl.ca/engagement-initiatives/2019-pre-budget-consultations external link icon to provide their feedback as part of the budget process.

Through this year’s pre-budget consultations, government is seeking public feedback on priority investments and discussions on how government can sustain the momentum created over the preceding three years.

In addition to online consultations, there will also be nine in-person consultation sessions hosted by provincial ministers starting this week. The schedule of in-person sessions is available in the backgrounder below.

The Provincial Government has reduced the annual deficit from over $2 billion in 2015-16, and the projected deficit for 2018-19 is less than $600 million. Government has also stabilized spending after a 10-year period when the provincial budget doubled, and has worked closely with industry to attract more than $16 billion in investment that will advance projects in the mining and oil and gas sectors.

Consistent with actions outlined in The Way Forward, government will continue to collaborate with industry partners in agriculture, aquaculture, advanced technology, tourism, forestry, community, oil and gas and mining sectors to create meaningful employment opportunities and an environment for success.

Any stakeholder wishing to provide a more detailed submission is encouraged to submit a written submission by email at Budget2019@gov.nl.ca.

Quote
“Since 2015, our government has taken significant action to address years of financial mismanagement by the previous administration and built a solid foundation for economic growth. Today, we are better positioned to capitalize on the exciting opportunities that exist in our province. I encourage all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to contribute to the discussion on how we can sustain the momentum that has been created.”
Honourable Tom Osborne
Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board
