Not-for-Profit Moose Licence Program Helping Support Province’s Charitable Groups

December 6, 2019

Charitable organizations throughout Newfoundland and Labrador continue to benefit from moose acquired through the Provincial Government’s not-for-profit moose licence allocation system.

Each year the Department of Fisheries and Land Resources allocates up to 370 moose licences for registered not-for-profit and charitable organizations operating in the province. Many organizations are taking advantage of the program that provides access to moose meat for fundraising or charitable purposes. Five hundred groups applied for a not-for-profit moose licence for the 2019-2020 moose hunting season.

Organizations to receive a licence this season include churches, volunteer fire departments, town councils and local social support groups. A complete list of recipients can be found here.

Not-for-profit groups successful in acquiring a licence are permitted to utilize qualified resident big game hunters to harvest a moose their behalf. They also have the choice to register to receive a dispatched nuisance moose from a farm as is the option for all recipients of a moose licence in the province. The annual success rate for not-for-profit moose licence holders is near 60 per cent.

Registered not-for-profit organizations considering submitting an application are encouraged to contact the Department of Fisheries and Land Resources Wildlife Division at 709-637-2025 or visit the department website www.flr.gov.nl.ca for additional information. The deadline for organizations to apply for a not-for-profit moose licence for the 2020-2021 big game hunting season is March 27, 2020 at 4:30 p.m.
