The Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Fisheries and Land Resources, today launched the Community Garden Support Program as part of Budget 2019, to help community groups, municipalities and local service districts “get growing” with support from annual grants.

The $500 grants will establish and enhance new and existing community gardens. Applications are now available online PDF icon and proponents of new gardens must provide details on their development plans. The deadline for applications is May 8, 2019.

The Provincial Agrifoods Assistance Program will invest $2.25 million in agriculture, including $100,000 for the Community Garden Support Program, with priority given to projects that support food self-sufficiency, increase agricultural growth and secondary processing, and generate employment.

Budget 2019 supports the Provincial Government’s commitment to double food self-sufficiency by 2022. The Community Garden Support Program will help raise awareness of food self-sufficiency, increase access to fresh foods and consumption of fruits and vegetables.
