Premier Ball Announces Senior Public Service Appointments

The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced two appointments to the senior executive of the Newfoundland and Labrador Public Service.

The following appointments have been made, effective immediately.

Tracy King is appointed as Deputy Minister with the Department of Fisheries and Land Resources and Dan Michielsen is appointed as Deputy Minister, on an acting basis, with the Department of Municipal Affairs and Environment.

BACKGROUNDER

Biographical Information

Tracy King
Tracy King was most recently the Deputy Minister of Municipal Affairs and Environment and previously served as the Deputy Minister of Transportation and Works. Prior to that, her roles included Assistant Deputy Minister, Government Renewal Initiative Secretariat, Executive Council, Assistant Secretary to Cabinet (Social Policy), and Assistant Deputy Minister (Policy and Planning) with the Department of Health and Community Services. Ms. King has also held a variety of policy-related positions with the Departments of Justice, Fisheries and Aquaculture, Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs, Health and Community Services, the Intergovernmental Affairs Secretariat and Cabinet Secretariat. Ms. King holds a Bachelor of Arts in political science and a certificate in public administration from Memorial University.

Dan Michielsen
Dan Michielsen is currently the Assistant Deputy Minister of Municipal Infrastructure and Support with the Department of Municipal Affairs and Environment. He started his career with the provincial public service in 1999 with the Department of Transportation and Works as environmental planner for the Trans Labrador Highway project.  Mr. Michielsen moved to the Environment Branch of the former Department of Environment and Conservation where he served in several capacities including Environmental Scientist, Manager of Industrial Compliance, and the Manager of Impacted Sites. He was seconded to coordinate several major remediation projects as well as oversee the development of the Province’s Impacted Sites Liability Assessment Program. Mr. Michielsen has also served in senior management positions including the Eastern Regional Director for Municipal Affairs and the Director of the Pollution Prevention Division. Mr. Michielsen earned a Diploma in Engineering Technology from Westviking College in 1997, a Bachelors of Technology from Cape Breton University in 1998 and a Masters of Applied Science in Environmental Engineering from Memorial University in 2004.
