Consumer protection, as well as safer roads and communities, highlighted the fall legislative session of the House of Assembly. The legislative agenda emphasized the Provincial Government’s actions to strengthen communities and make Newfoundland and Labrador a great place to live, work, and raise a family.

The session included a new and modern Real Estate Trading Act, which helps protect consumers in one of the largest transactions of their lives. The legislation went through a legislative review where members of the public, industry and other stakeholders had the opportunity to ask questions and discuss the elements of the bill.

The Provincial Government’s legislative agenda also:

  • Enhanced enforcement and road safety by permitting the use of camera technology;
  • Provided flexibility to parents for their childcare and family planning needs;
  • Supported protection for those at risk of intimate partner violence;
  • Created regulation-making authority for the College of Registered Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador to make regulations respecting scope of practice for nurses;
  • Allowed permit holders to get assistance from others to cut firewood for personal use; and
  • Supported government’s position in recovering health care costs suffered as a result of opioid-related wrongs.

The session also included a Private Members Resolution introduced by Sarah Stoodley, MHA for Mount Scio, to increase electric vehicle stations and encourage to transition to electric vehicles.

Quote
“This legislative session was focused on improving consumer protection, safety and supporting families. I thank all of the MHAs for their contribution in advancing important legislation that creates healthier, safer communities.”
