Delegates of Premier’s Forum Discuss Municipal Approach to Health, Diversity and Inclusion

The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, hosted the fourth annual Premier’s Forum on Local Government this morning at the St. John’s Convention Centre. Premier Ball was joined by the Honourable Derrick Bragg, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Environment, and approximately 50 delegates representing municipalities from across the province. The forum was held in conjunction with Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador, the Combined Councils of Labrador and Professional Municipal Administrators.

This year’s forum was designed to focus on the types of things municipal leaders can consider when making decisions to enhance health, diversity and inclusion. Delegates heard from subject-matter experts and learned about tools that they can utilize to help address common concerns facing communities across the province.

Round table discussions were held that allowed municipal leaders to collaborate, share ideas, and discuss what has worked well for communities. On the topic of Health-in-All-Policies, delegates talked about how all levels of government can incorporate health considerations into decision-making, prevent illness, and create the healthy environments needed to promote and support the health and well-being of communities. Delegates also discussed age-friendly and accessible communities, as well as how to support welcoming and inclusive communities for newcomers that encourage attraction and retention.

“The forum was a great success again this year and it was beneficial to hear so many perspectives from communities large and small, urban and rural. The discussions on how we can enable communities to grow and prosper as places that Newfoundlanders and Labradorians want to live, work, and raise their families are important to making this a better province for current and future generations.”
Honourable Dwight Ball
Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

“I’d like to thank all the delegates that participated in the forum as we continue to work to support our municipal leaders to build safe, healthy and sustainable communities.”
Honourable Derrick Bragg
Minister of Municipal Affairs and Environment
