Provincial and Federal Governments Announce $270 Million Housing Agreement
Demonstrating a joint commitment to affordable housing for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, the Provincial and Federal Governments have agreed to invest a total of $270.6 million to help protect, renew and expand social and community housing in the province, as well as to support Newfoundland and Labrador’s priorities related to housing repair, construction, and affordability.
This cost-shared Bilateral Agreement includes $135.3 million from the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and $135.3 million from the Government of Canada.
The agreement was announced at an event today in St. John’s which was attended by the Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Honourable Seamus O’Regan, Minister of Indigenous Services, on behalf of the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development and Minister Responsible for the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, the Honourable Lisa Dempster, Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development and Minister responsible for the Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation, and Nick Whalen, Member of Parliament for St. John’s East.
Through the new housing agreement, there will be enhanced standards of housing quality, which includes improved energy efficiency and accessibility. It will also acknowledge the importance of prioritizing people most in need and applying a gender lens to all investments.
The National Housing Strategy is built on strong partnerships between the Federal, Provincial and Territorial Governments, and continuous engagement with others, including municipalities, Indigenous governments and organizations, and the social and private housing sectors.
This investment delivers on commitments in The Way Forward to strengthen the province’s economic foundation, enhance efficiency, and deliver better services and better outcomes for residents. The Way Forward outlines all actions the Provincial Government is taking to achieve a strong, diversified province with a high standard of living, and can be viewed at thewayforward.gov.nl.ca.
