The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, is encouraging all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to celebrate the inspiring and immeasurable work of volunteers during National Volunteer Week.

Community sector representatives, as well as the 2019 honorary chairs, Raylene Mackey – a youth leader, Hasan Hai of Project Kindness NL, and Carl English with the St. John’s Edge, joined Premier Ball who signed a proclamation to recognize April 7-13 as 2019 Volunteer Week.

This year’s theme is The Volunteer Factor – Lifting Communities, which highlights the exponential impact of volunteers and how they lift their communities.

The community sector in particular generates significant employment, and its members, both paid and volunteer, help build healthy, dynamic and prosperous communities. The Provincial Government, in partnership with the Community Sector Council of Newfoundland and Labrador and community organizations throughout the province, is finalizing a work plan to recognize and support the social and economic contributions of the community sector and its volunteer-led organizations.

Through a comprehensive engagement process, over 275 volunteers and community sector employees shared the challenges faced as well as the tremendous potential that exists when government, community and other partners work together.

In Newfoundland and Labrador, there are over 200,000 active volunteers, which means almost half of the province’s population volunteers in some capacity.
