Office of the Chief Electoral Officer – Elections NL Accepting Special Ballot Applications for 2019 General Election

  • Office of the Chief Electoral Officer

April 18, 2019

Elections NL is now accepting Special Ballot voting applications for the 2019 General Election. Special Ballot voting offers the opportunity to vote prior to the Advance Polls and Election Day. Any person who is 18 years of age or older by May 16 (Election Day), a Canadian Citizen and a resident of Newfoundland and Labrador can apply to vote by Special Ballot.

Though people can submit Special Ballot applications now, voting cannot begin until after the close of candidate nominations. This is in accordance with new legislation passed in October 2017 (Elections Act, 1991, section 86.3(3)).

Applications filed now will be processed and held until candidate nominations close on April 25 at 2:00 p.m. After that time passes, Elections NL will issue the Special Ballot kits, which contain the ballot and voting instructions.

The deadline to apply for a Special Ballot is Thursday, May 9, at 6:00 p.m.

Applications are available from any of the 61 Special Ballot offices established throughout the province, Elections Newfoundland and Labrador headquarters at 39 Hallett Crescent in St. John’s, or online at www.elections.gov.nl.ca/elections/resources/forms/sb/SB-F-1.pdf PDF icon.
