Capital Renovation Grants Assist Child Care Providers in Making Quality Improvements

  • Education and Early Childhood Development

April 8, 2019

The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, announced today that $6.5 million in Capital Renovation Grants has been allocated to 59 child care service providers. The grants are being provided through the $22 million three-year bi-lateral agreement with the Federal Government for early learning and child care investments. Minister Hawkins announced the grants at an event in St. John today. He was joined by the Honourable Bernard Davis, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour and MHA for Virginia Waters – Pleasantville.

Regulated child care service providers applied for the grant to assist them in making improvements to meet requirements under the new Child Care Act and Regulations implemented July, 2017. These improvements include the addition of commercial grade outdoor play equipment or completion of renovations to a child care building. The final date for submissions of applications was December 31, 2018.

A list of child care service providers availing of a Capital Renovation Grant is included in the backgrounder below.

Funding under the bi-lateral agreement is helping to address early learning and child care challenges through subsidies, grants and bursaries and is creating more quality, affordable child care for eligible families with young children.

Supporting early learning and child care reflects commitments in The Way Forward to deliver better services and better outcomes for residents. The Way Forward outlines all actions the Provincial Government is taking to achieve a strong, diversified province with a high standard of living, and can be viewed at www.thewayforward.gov.nl.ca
