Child and Youth Advocate Releases Special Report on Trans Youth

Child and Youth Advocate Jackie Lake Kavanagh has released a new report that focuses on the struggles and challenges of many gender diverse youth in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Special Report on Trans Youth in Newfoundland and Labrador presents the stories and experiences shared by young people in focus groups. It builds awareness and amplifies the voices of these youth who have an important message to share. The Report highlights the challenges these youth identified in several key areas, including school, medical, and social support services. There are five recommendations.

The Child and Youth Advocate thanks all the young people who shared their stories and contributed to the report, and stated, “These recommendations will be important in improving responses in our province.” She also thanks those currently working hard to protect these young people’s rights. She urges government departments, public agencies, community organizations and individual citizens to stand up for these young people’s rights and to show support in meaningful ways.
