December 19, 2019

Today, the Honourable Lisa Dempster, Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development, announced the launch of an engagement process for the five-year statutory review of the Adoption Act, 2013. The purpose of this legislation is to govern the adoption process in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Department of Children, Seniors and Social Development, in consultation with the Public Engagement and Planning Division, is gathering input on the ways in which the adoption legislation is impacting children, youth, families, and the public, as well as identifying ways in which the legislation can be improved.

The engagement process includes an online questionnaire and meetings that will provide targeted key stakeholders, such as birth families, adoptive families, foster parents and Indigenous governments and organizations, with the opportunity to share their input and perspectives on the province’s Adoption Act, 2013.

This process is also open to the public by visiting engageNL.ca  to complete an online questionnaire by February 28, 2020. Further, anyone interested in providing input on the legislation can call 709-729-5134 or email adoptionreview2019@gov.nl.ca  to make a submission and/or request a meeting with departmental staff to discuss.
