The Honourable Lisa Dempster, Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development, announced today that applications are now being accepted for the Age-Friendly Newfoundland and Labrador Communities Program. Budget 2019 allocates $95,000 for the Age-Friendly NL Communities program. Funding is available to communities and regions who wish to conduct an age-friendly community assessment, develop an age-friendly action plan, and implement actions.
Incorporated municipalities and Indigenous governments and communities throughout the province are eligible for funding of up to $10,000 to support planning for changing demographics. Clear evidence of proposed partnerships and team building must be provided with the application. Applications from groups of communities will also be considered, and a regional approach is encouraged. Starting this year, projects that take a regional approach are eligible for up to $15,000.
Funding is also available to complete age-friendly action items that stem from age friendly assessments. These can be in any of the eight key domains identified in the age friendly community process: outdoor spaces and buildings, transportation, housing, social participation, respect and social inclusion, civic participation and employment, communication and information, and community support and health services.

An age-friendly community is one where the physical and social environments enable individuals to live in a secure setting, enjoy health and continue to participate fully in society, regardless of age. The Age-Friendly Newfoundland and Labrador Communities program builds upon a global movement initiated by the World Health Organization and endorsed by the Public Health Agency of Canada. This movement aims to meet the demands of the world’s aging population/demographic shift by encouraging the establishment of policies, services and structures that promote healthy aging and wellness across the lifespan. Active aging as a lifelong process supports seniors of today and tomorrow.
