Provincial Government Celebrates Foster Families Month

The Honourable Lisa Dempster, Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development, recently joined Newfoundland and Labrador Foster Families Association Chair Edie Newton, Executive Director Diane Molloy and foster families to sign a proclamation recognizing October as National Foster Families Month.

There are approximately 585 foster families located throughout Newfoundland and Labrador dedicated to helping children and youth by providing safe and nurturing homes.

The Department of Children, Seniors and Social Development works closely with the Newfoundland and Labrador Foster Families Association to recruit and support foster parents as we jointly recognize the vital role foster families fulfil in our province.

The Foster Families Association kicked off the month on October 5, with a gathering of foster families and community members who contribute to their success. A variety of activities are planned for the remainder of the month, throughout the province.

Quotes
“Every child and every youth deserves to feel protected, safe and secure, and this is where foster families shine. When they open their hearts and homes to children and youth in need of comfort, safety and security, they create endless opportunities for them to thrive and succeed. Along with our many dedicated foster parents, we also have a deep appreciation for the staff of the Foster Families Association, board members, social workers, and many others who contribute to our foster care community.”
Honourable Lisa Dempster
Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development

“Becoming foster parents has been one of the most rewarding experiences my husband and I have ever had. Fostering is an opportunity like no other to make a positive difference in a child’s life while supporting family reunification and therefore well worth any challenge we might encounter. It is an opportunity I would encourage others to explore if they are interested.”
