Melanie Taylor from Conception Bay South has won Team Newfoundland and Labrador’s first medal at the 2019 Canada Winter Games capturing a gold medal in Special Olympics Level 2 Figure Skating.

Ms. Taylor is a five-time provincial champion and also represented Newfoundland and Labrador at the 2015 Canada Winter Games in Prince George, British Columbia. In 2016, she won a bronze medal as a member of Team Newfoundland and Labrador at the Special Olympic Canada Winter Games in Corner Brook.

Melanie began her skating career at the age of three. She currently trains on-ice three times a week as a member of the Conception Bay South Skating Club.

The 2019 Canada Winter Games are being held in Red Deer, Alberta, from February 15 to March 3. The first games were held in 1967 in Quebec City and Newfoundland and Labrador has been represented at every event since. Newfoundland and Labrador hosted the 1977 Canada Summer Games in St. John’s and the 1999 Canada Winter Games in Corner Brook. The Canada Summer Games will return to the province in 2025.

“Congratulations to Melanie on this outstanding achievement. Winning a gold medal at the Canada Games is a significant accomplishment and I share in the excitement of all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians as we celebrate this success. Having recently returned from Red Deer, I had the opportunity to see how much our athletes have committed to training and preparing for the games and I am so pleased that Melanie’s hard work and preparation have paid off.”
