Minister Announces Appointments to Memorial University Board of Regents

The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, today announced four appointments to Memorial University of Newfoundland’s Board of Regents.

The appointees are:

  • Andrew Woodland as Alumni Representative;
  • Ian Duncan Chandi Anuda as Student Representative (Grenfell Campus Student Union);
  • Michael Howse as Student Representative (Marine Institute Students’ Union); and,
  • Amaan Merchant as Student Representative (Memorial University of Newfoundland Students’ Union).

The Independent Appointments Commission Act applies to all members of the Board of Regents, with the exception of student appointees who are nominated by their respective student unions, and alumni appointees who are nominated by Memorial University of Newfoundland’s Alumni Association.

The Board of Regents is the corporate body of Memorial University. The management, administration and control of the property, revenue, business and affairs of Memorial University are vested in the Board of Regents.

Biographical for Appointees to Memorial University’s Board of Regents

Andrew Woodland
Andrew Woodland has a Bachelor of Commerce from Memorial University and a Law Degree from the University of New Brunswick. He is currently an In-House Counsel with the Office of the City Solicitor, City of St. John’s. Mr. Woodland’s extensive community involvement includes serving as an executive board member of Choices for Youth. 

Ian Duncan Chandi Anunda
Ian Duncan Chandi Anunda has a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Computing from the University of Nairobi and is studying Computational Mathematics at Memorial University’s Grenfell Campus. He currently works as a Statistics Lecturer Assistant at Grenfell Campus and has volunteered extensively in Corner Brook and Kenya. 

Michael Howse
Michael Howse has a Diploma of Technology in Remotely Operated Vehicles from Memorial University’s Marine Institute, where he is pursuing a Bachelor of Technology Degree. He has worked as an ROV Research Tech Intern with Subsea 7 and has served the university community as Vice President of the Marine Institute Students’ Union. 

Amaan Merchant
Amaan Merchant is pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration from Memorial University. He has worked as an Accounting and Administrative Assistant with Memorial University’s Centre for Entrepreneurship and currently serves as Student Assistant at the university’s Sustainability Office. He has led or participated in numerous community initiatives including English language culture and business clubs.
