October 3, 2019

The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, hosted the fifth Minister’s Roundtable on Immigration in Happy Valley-Goose Bay yesterday (Wednesday, October 2).

The roundtable brought together representatives of various sectors including the business community, labour, K-12 education system, post-secondary institutions, municipalities, community organizations and service providers. It served as a forum for discussion and collaboration as members combined efforts to find innovative ways to recruit and retain more newcomers.

Members discussed the experience of employers and newcomers using the province’s immigration programs and identified priorities for future collaboration. Members also discussed The Way Forward on Immigration in Newfoundland and Labrador’s new initiatives focusing on retention.

These initiatives aim to increase newcomer attraction and retention through concerted action by all levels of government, employers, communities, and residents.

Federal year-end data for 2018 indicates 1,530 individuals became permanent residents in Newfoundland and Labrador, representing 90 per cent of The Way Forward 2022 target of 1,700 newcomers annually.

The Minister’s Roundtable on Immigration delivers on commitments in The Way Forward to strengthen the province’s economic foundation and deliver better outcomes for residents. The Way Forward outlines all actions the Provincial Government is taking to achieve a strong, diversified province with a high standard of living, and can be viewed at thewayforward.gov.nl.ca.

Quote
“I commend the members of the Minister’s Roundtable on Immigration for their time and expertise in helping our province attract and retain more newcomers. Labrador represents the region with the second-highest level of immigration in the province, and we continue to see growth in partnerships, collaboration, and engagement.””
