The Honourable Bernard Davis, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, today toured NEWCO Metal and Auto Recycling’s new processing facility in Foxtrap, Conception Bay South.

NEWCO’s new processing facility is the first of its type in the province and features an advanced shredder produced by Wendt Industries. Last year, the Provincial Government invested $260,000 under the Labour Market Partnerships program to provide training for workers using the new and highly-specialized equipment.

Twenty existing and newly-hired employees received comprehensive, hands-on training including technical inspections, operating trials, commissioning, operations, maintenance, troubleshooting, and safety. In addition, extensive cross-training was provided to the employees on various aspects of the shredder’s operation, maintenance protocols and safety considerations.

Skills development and economic diversification delivers on commitments in The Way Forward to strengthen the province’s economic foundation. The Way Forward outlines all actions the Provincial Government is taking to achieve a strong, diversified province with a high standard of living, and can be viewed at www.thewayforward.gov.nl.ca.

Quotes
“NEWCO Metal and Auto Recycling’s new processing facility is the first of its kind in the province. Our government is proud to support NEWCO as it strengthens the skills of its workforce. This is another example of an initiative we have undertaken through The Way Forward to help strengthen and diversify the economy.”
Honourable Bernard Davis
Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour

“The construction and operation of the new shredder brings metal recycling ahead 20 years from where we were. It also has a major reduction in carbon compared to hauling crushed scrap to mainland Canada. This new facility will be processing recyclable scrap metal from the entire province. Putting jobs, industry, and prosperity here with a 100% locally owned and operated company.”
