Provincial Government Acknowledges Bastille Day

The Honourable Bernard Davis, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour and the Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, are acknowledging today Bastille Day.

Also known as the National Celebration in France, Bastille Day commemorates the storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789. On Sunday, French and francophone people will celebrate this turning point in the French Revolution, which had a far-reaching impact on societies throughout the world.

Bastille Day is one of the biggest and most important holidays of the year in France, including in St. Pierre and Miquelon. It is celebrated with parades, parties, and fun activities with family and friends.

Quotes
“France is our closest neighbour. The rich history of Newfoundland and Labrador’s vibrant and growing francophone community is evident throughout the province, from place and family names to expressions and cuisine. It is my pleasure to wish French and francophone people in this province, St. Pierre and Miquelon, and around the world a happy Fête nationale!”
Honourable Bernard Davis
Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour

“Our government recognizes the significance of Bastille Day, and what it means to not only those in Newfoundland and Labrador, but to our neighbours in St. Pierre et Miquelon as well. The Francophone and Acadian community form an integral part of our province’s social, cultural and economic fabric, and we are proud to join them in this wonderful celebration of French culture. Happy Bastille Day!”
Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore
Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation
Minister Responsible for Francophone Affairs
