Appointments Announced to College of the North Atlantic Board of Governors

The Honourable Bernard Davis, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, today announced appointments to College of the North Atlantic’s (CNA) Board of Governors.

Appointed to the board are:

  • Debbie Brake-Petten
  • Kevin Kelly
  • Chris Newhook
  • Sam Synard

The Board of Governors is CNA’s corporate body responsible for overseeing, managing and directing the college including its financial operations and academic programming. The board comprises up to 18 members, including two representatives nominated by the CNA Student Union.

These appointments were recommended though the merit-based Independent Appointments Commission. Members of the public interested in opportunities to serve on provincial agencies, boards and commissions are encouraged to complete an application at www.iacnl.ca external link icon.

Appointments to College of the North Atlantic’s Board of Governors

Dr. Debbie Brake-Petten
Dr. Debbie Brake-Patten has experience in education, governance, policy and planning, human resources, health, and entrepreneurship. She currently serves as Mayor of the Town of Kippens, having previously served as Deputy Mayor and Finance Chair, and is an active member of the Newfoundland and Labrador Chiropractic Association. She has extensive volunteer experience and has served on the boards of numerous organizations such as the Stephenville Historical Society.

Kevin Kelly
Kevin Kelly has experience in governance, policy and planning, and health. He has a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Memorial University of Newfoundland and is Chief Operating Officer at Genoa Design International Ltd. Mr. Kelly is active in his community and has served as a community representative for Cowan Heights Elementary School.

Chris Newhook
Chris Newhook has experience in education, governance, policy and planning, financial literacy, marine services, and entrepreneurship. He is currently General Manager of the Port of Argentia and continues to serve as a director of the Placentia Area Chamber of Commerce, where he was previously Executive Director. He has a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Memorial University of Newfoundland and is active in the Placentia Lions Club.

Sam Synard
Sam Synard has been an active volunteer and community organizer for over 25 years. He has served on numerous national and provincial boards, and has been active on municipal council since 1989. Sam is a graduate of Memorial University and has a Master’s degree from the University of New Brunswick.
