April 2, 2019

The Honourable Bernard Davis, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, today announced Newfoundland and Labrador will host the Forum of Labour Market Ministers (FLMM) Secretariat for a two-year term commencing April 1, 2019.

Created in 1983 and comprising provincial and territorial ministers and the federal minister responsible for labour market issues, the FLMM promotes discussion and cooperation on common labour market matters. It works to address shared labour market issues cooperatively to ensure Canada has a skilled, adaptable and inclusive workforce that supports a competitive Canadian economy. FLMM is committed to fostering inclusive workforce participation, better aligning skills with evolving labour market needs, and supporting efficient labour markets to better serve all Canadians.

The secretariat rotates between provinces every two years and its operations and activities are cost shared between the Federal Government and provinces and territories, including its staff of four. It provides administrative and coordinating support to the FLMM and its associated subcommittees.

The Forum of Labour Market Ministers Secretariat will be housed within the Department of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour and will complement the ongoing work to encourage economic growth and diversification through The Way Forward, the Atlantic Workforce Partnership and Atlantic Growth Strategy, the immigration action plan, and other strategic federal and provincial initiatives.

This national office is in addition to the province’s current role as co-lead of the Canadian Association of Administrators of Labour Legislation (CAALL). As well, the province currently hosts the Atlantic Workforce Partnership office and the Atlantic Apprenticeship Harmonization office, which includes six staff members.

The presence of these offices in the province will help strengthen work to continue to build a skilled workforce.
