Government Adds New Tow Plow, Expands Plow Tracker Service to Labrador

December 21, 2018

The Department of Transportation and Works has begun expanding the Provincial Plow Tracker service to highways in Labrador and a second tow plow will be added to the Trans-Canada Highway on the Avalon Peninsula in January.

Equipment in western and central Labrador can now be seen on the plow tracker while equipment in southern Labrador will be added in the coming weeks. Updates will be provided on the Twitter @TW_GovNL , when equipment is added.

The Provincial Plow Tracker service began in December 2017 for equipment on the Avalon Peninsula and routes with overnight snow clearing. By March 2018, the service had been expanded to include snow clearing equipment at all depots on the island portion of the province.

The tow plows – traditional snow plows with a second blade towed behind the vehicle – clear snow and spread salt on two lanes at the same time. Both will be assigned to the divided Trans-Canada Highway on the Avalon Peninsula. The province’s first tow plow was introduced in November 2017.

Earlier this fall, the department added a new highway camera on the Trans-Canada Highway at St. George’s. Work is continuing to add cameras at Lumsden, Rocky Harbour and Stephenville, which are expected to be online this winter. The department is also planning to add more cameras on other routes, including Argentia Access Road (Route 100) and Hearts Content Barrens (Route 74) in 2019.

The Provincial Plow Tracker, highway cameras, driving conditions reports, and updates via the department’s Twitter, @TW_GovNL, can be found at www.roads.gov.nl.ca.

This initiative delivers on commitments in The Way Forward to deliver better services and better outcomes for residents. The Way Forward outlines all actions the Provincial Government is taking to achieve a strong, diversified province with a high standard of living, and can be viewed at thewayforward.gov.nl.ca.

Quote
“The new tow plow and highway cameras and the expansion of the plow tracker service into Labrador are enabling motorists to make more informed decisions before they travel, but we always remind everyone to drive to conditions this winter. I also take this opportunity to thank the more than 700 people throughout the province who work nights and day on our highways, often in dangerous, terrible weather to keep people safe. We appreciate the service you provide.”
