December 28, 2018

The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, today announced board appointments and re-appointments to the Newfoundland and Labrador Film Development Corporation (NLFDC).

Mark Sexton has been appointed chair of the board, while Cheryl Stagg, Noreen Golfman, Craig Goudie, and Colleen Kennedy have been re-appointed for three-year terms. New to the board, also serving three-year appointments are Cyndy Stead and Heidi Wagner.

The film and television industry in Newfoundland and Labrador exceeded $50 million in total production value in 2017-18. Strengthened by its best year since the creation of NLFDC, total production activity in the province now surpasses $450 million. More than 600 direct, indirect and induced fulltime employment equivalencies were created last year through this industry. In addition, over 70 per cent of the funds used to create motion pictures in Newfoundland and Labrador have been outside investments, representing new money leveraged into the province for the production of film and television.

Appointments made to agencies, boards and commissions are done through a merit-based process established by the Independent Appointments Commission Act. Biographical information for board members is available in the backgrounder below.

Quotes
“I welcome new members to the board, as well as those who have been reappointed. Each individual brings unique experience to the board, which will only help build on NLFDC’s most successful year to date. We will continue to work to ensure that we capitalize on these opportunities, as this industry is a generator of well-paid, skilled jobs and leverages new investment from sources outside the province. Our government is committed to supporting the film and television industry in our province.”
