The Governments of Newfoundland and Labrador and Canada are investing more than $746,000 to help the Town of Carbonear implement Phase One of its Downtown Revitalization Plan.

The Honourable Steve Crocker, Minister of Transportation and Works and MHA for Carbonear – Trinity – Bay de Verde, on behalf of the Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, today announced a contribution of $207,229 from the Regional Development Program for the project. Ken McDonald, Member of Parliament for Avalon, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, announced a contribution of $538,796 from ACOA’s Innovation Communities Fund.

The town’s three-phased plan will create an attractive and distinctive Heritage Waterfront District that displays community pride and heritage, including improved streetscape, landscaping and signage that will guide visitors and residents to tourist sites and local businesses in the area. Phase One will focus on the Carbonear Row Cultural Quarter and includes enhanced sidewalks, signage, Wi-Fi hotspots, murals, fixed furniture, landscaping and lighting.

These investments build on commitments made by the Government of Canada and the four Atlantic Provinces to drive economic growth in the region through the Atlantic Growth Strategy by helping the region’s tourism industry attract more visitors and create new jobs across the region. This bold new approach is in line with Canada’s Tourism Vision, which seeks to make Canada a top-10 global tourism destination by 2025.

Support for the arts, heritage and culture sectors deliver on commitments in The Way Forward to strengthen the province’s economic foundation. The Way Forward outlines all actions the Provincial Government is taking to achieve a strong, diversified province with a high standard of living, and can be viewed at thewayforward.gov.nl.ca.

Today’s announcement aligns with this initiative, as it will build a connection to tourism products and experiences, as well as cultural and heritage assets in downtown Carbonear. When completed, these enhancements will certainly have a positive impact on the regional economy by strengthening the tourism offerings on the Baccalieu Trail, and improving the Town of Carbonear’s tourism infrastructure as a whole.”

“Carbonear is a community with hundreds of years’ worth of culture and history. The provincial and federal investments announced today will showcase this history in a new and modern way. This plan for the Heritage Waterfront District will provide a rewarding experience for visitors and residents as they explore one of the oldest European settlements in North America.”

“With every investment in tourism and economic growth in a community, such as Carbonear, a solid platform must be established to ensure that future development projects are sustainable. I am pleased to say that downtown Carbonear has this solid base. Investing in the revitalization of this area, by all three levels of government, will not only create a beautified area in our town, it will also create employment, promote tourism and a place to build and conduct commerce”
