Provincial Government Launches Enhanced Iceberg Finder Tool

The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, today announced the launch of significant new features and enhancements to the Provincial Government’s tourism website . is the leading online channel for tracking icebergs off of Newfoundland and Labrador, using satellite technology, as well as visual sightings from tourism operators and staff from Visitor Information Centres, to track iceberg locations in real time. Last season, the website had more than 400,000 site visits from people interested in icebergs. 

The new version of has several enhanced features:

  • A responsive design that allows travellers to access the site on mobile devices and upload photographs of icebergs using #IcebergsNL in real-time, sharing viewing location with other users;
  • Travellers can find things to do and places to stay near the viewing locations, with appropriate links to tourism operator listings; and
  • Icebergs do move and melt, so photos of the icebergs will remain plotted for seven days. Afterwards, iceberg photos shared throughout the season will then be displayed in a full image gallery. 

Resident and non-resident travellers and tourism operators are encouraged to upload iceberg photos to; subscribe to receive the Iceberg Alerts eNewsletter; and utilize #IcebergsNL on their social channels. 

Destination Canada is partnering with Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism to encourage the sharing of user-generated-content and photos may also be shared on Explore Canada social channels.  

This initiative delivers on commitments in The Way Forward to strengthen the province’s economic foundation. The Way Forward outlines all actions the Provincial Government is taking to achieve a strong, diversified province with a high standard of living, and can be viewed at

Launched over 10 years ago as a partnership between Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador and C-CORE, and is an integral part of Newfoundland and Labrador’s tourism marketing campaign efforts.”
