April 27, 2018

To further build on the Provincial Government’s commitment to fostering conditions that enable innovation-driven business to develop, scale-up, grow and diversify, the Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, today announced a Business Investment Loan of $499,000 to Empowered Homes Incorporated, to support the development of programmable thermostats for lowering residential energy consumption. Minister Mitchelmore was joined by Mark Browne, Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation

Empowered Homes has developed a product solution called Mysa, which is a mobile app enabled, Wi-Fi compatible, line voltage thermostat that combines a sleek design with innovative software to give users total control of their heating systems remotely. Mysa maximizes energy saving by using algorithms based on user habits and big data to automate a heating schedule, without sacrificing the homeowner’s comfort. Using Mysa, projected cost savings could potentially reach 10 to 20 per cent annually.

Through the Business Innovation Agenda, the Provincial Government is supporting the development of an entrepreneurial pipeline in Newfoundland and Labrador with support throughout the business life-cycle from concept to seed, to start-up and then scale-up and growth.

Through the Cabinet Committee on Jobs, the Provincial Government has collaborated with industry on the development of a Technology Sector Work Plan, to maximize private sector job creation and economic growth as set out in The Way Forward. Today’s announcement provides support for a new and innovative venture and highlights the exciting opportunities in our technology sector. In addition, it builds on previously announced supports for ventures in other identified priority sectors including aquaculture and agriculture to foster new economic development throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. Details regarding progress to date with these sectors, and the current status of other economic development initiatives, are now available online at thewayforward.gov.nl.ca.

Actions to advance the mining, forestry, and community sectors will be officially launched at sector summit events later this year.
