Providing Unique and Innovative Solutions

The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, accompanied by Mark Browne, Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, today toured CoLab Software to view a $116,362 project that will allow designers to work collaboratively on technical drawings and 3D models.

Currently, mechanical and product design work is executed in a linear fashion with collaboration throughout the review phase being slow and costly. CoLab’s innovative web application will allow both technical and non-technical users to securely view, mark-up and comment on any computer-aided design (CAD) file in their browser without the need for expensive software or complex interfaces. This new technology will help designers share ideas, develop plans and shorten the time it takes to develop products and go to market. CoLab has built a minimum viable product and will launch its first products with customers through the early adopter program.

CoLab is a start-up company, led by a group of recent graduates from Memorial University’s Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science. In 2017, the company won Memorial’s Centre for Entrepreneurship’s Startup Cup, receiving $10,000 in funding.

The Provincial Government is committed to supporting innovation and technology in the province. As part of The Way Forward vision, in the coming weeks, government will join with the technology sector in hosting a Technology Summit that will include the release of an action plan to further support the industry.

“After witnessing the problem of collaboration on some of the world’s most innovative projects, we decided to start CoLab to solve it. The support from TCII and others in the province has been a major part in making this journey feasible. It has enabled us to hire several local employees and will be the financial catalyst for achieving the baseline of our first product.”
