Enhanced Vehicle Registrations Increase Security

Effective January 2019, Motor Registration Division (MRD) will begin issuing a new, more secure, vehicle registration document for all future commercial and non-commercial vehicle transactions.

The new registration document will have the sticker embedded in the paper with the expiry month and year printed on it. Vehicle owners will peel the sticker from the registration form and adhere it to their licence plate, as they did previously.

In addition, a new feature has been added – the licence plate number will now also be listed on the sticker, reducing the risk of fraud or theft.

Customers visiting a Service NL office to perform vehicle transactions such as new vehicle registration, renewals or vehicle transfers, for example, will no longer receive their registration or sticker over the counter. Instead, customers will receive a printed receipt, reducing the wait time for basic renewal transactions by about half. This receipt will include unique vehicle details and confirm the transaction completed for this vehicle, similar to what is available for online transactions today. The sticker will be mailed the following business day and customers are advised to keep the receipt in their vehicle until the sticker is received by mail.

Currently, over 165,000 vehicles renewals are completed through the eServices portal annually. Those who do so receive a discount through the pay online secure payment option. These customers can expect to receive their stickers in the mail quicker with this new process.

All registration documents will be printed at a single MRD location, eliminating the need for inventory controls, storage and monitoring of these secure documents, and reducing the risk of error associated with manual processing.

Regular services such as new registrations or vehicle transfers can still be requested at any Service NL office and vehicle renewals can still be completed online, by fax or mail, or in person.

An enhanced vehicle registration process delivers on commitments in The Way Forward to deliver better services and better outcomes for residents. The Way Forward outlines all actions the Provincial Government is taking to achieve a strong, diversified province with a high standard of living, and can be viewed at thewayforward.gov.nl.ca.
