The following statement was given today in the House of Assembly by the Honourable Sherry Gambin-Walsh, Minister of Service NL:

Mr. Speaker, earlier this month the Provincial Government launched SkillsPass NL – free online training courses to help increase employability, productivity and regulatory compliance. As the regulator, Service NL’s goal is to help individuals and businesses gain a better understanding of their requirements, in an effort to help them better prepare for inspections.

Courses in food services and tobacco and vapour retail industries are currently available. Individuals currently employed in these areas will be able to make a more positive contribution at their place of employment through the knowledge and skills they will gain through this online training.

For people seeking employment, the completion of the online training will provide them with industry-specific knowledge that should help increase their employability. For employers, the courses will provide a better understanding of the regulatory environment under which they operate, allowing them to better meet the requirements and continue to operate successfully.

Mr. Speaker, The Way Forward places great emphasis on better services and better outcomes for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador. We also committed to enhancing government-wide service delivery by moving toward a digital service delivery model.

In keeping with these objectives, we entered into a four-year partnership with Bluedrop Performance Learning to develop SkillsPass NL. Additional courses will continue to be added, as they are developed. We encourage people to sign-up at ServiceNL.myskillspass.io to take advantage of these free course offerings.

Thank you, Mr. Speaker.
