October 1, 2018

The Honourable Sherry Gambin-Walsh, Minister of Service NL, today launched the first SkillsPass NL training courses for workers in the food service and tobacco and vapour retail industries. The minister was joined by Emad Rizkalla, Founder and CEO of Bluedrop Performance Learning, creator of SkillsPass NL.

Two food safety courses, Getting off the Ground and What to Expect When We’re Inspecting, will be available to prospective and current owners and managers of food premises, and will explain the application, licensing and inspection processes along with the applicable standards. The Responsible Tobacco and Vapour Products Retailing course is divided into two streams. One course helps employers understand the laws and regulations pertaining to selling tobacco and vapour products, while the other course helps employees understand their roles and responsibilities when selling tobacco and vapour products.

These e-learning courses will be available free of charge to anyone interested and participants’ training records will be available to them electronically. More information can be found at serviceNL.myskillspass.io.

SkillsPass NL is a workforce development project with the goal to increase worker employability, workplace productivity and regulatory compliance in the workplace by enhancing workforce knowledge and skills through interactive online training opportunities.

Quotes
“As a regulator, Service NL requires employees and employers to comply with many different types of regulations and standards. These online training opportunities will provide employers with a better understanding of the regulatory environment under which they operate and provide industry specific knowledge for those seeking work, increasing their employability.”
Honourable Sherry Gambin-Walsh
Minister of Service NL

“We are pleased to bring these new digital services to Newfoundland and Labrador. They will make a difference in people’s careers and save businesses time and money. This training will have a positive impact provincially, and is already helping us create great jobs in our St. John’s headquarters. It also provides the latest in a series of technologies we have successfully piloted and proven in our home province, before bringing them to the world. We look forward to continuing our innovative work with Service NL and expanding them to other provincial departments.”
